Women Against Assault

No women every wants to think she will be assaulted in any point of time in her life; yet, sadly that is not the case. According to rainn.org a women is a victim of sexual assault every 2 minutes and there are over 207,000 sexual assaults a year. Imagining that someone is sexually assaulted every two minutes is hard to believe, but it this is cold hard truth.

As women we need to to take a stand against sexual assault. Some people say that women who are dressed more provocatively where "asking for it," which is definitely not the case. No matter how a women it dressed it does not give anyone the right to physically force themselves onto them in any shape form or fashion.

Secondly, women need to become advocates for the word "NO." If someone is coming onto you and you say no, no still means no. Maybe, I'll think about it is, is not good enough. Don't leave anything up to interpretation. This two letter word could ultimately change the outcome of some situations.

Furthermore, we can always take the precarious route of carrying pepper spray, or a pocket knife, or even a tassor if need be so in case we ever find ourselves in this type of situation you have a little something extra to help protect you. The only downfall with using items such as these is that you have to not only be prepared to use them if a situation unfolds, but also know how to use them properly so you will not ultimately end up hurting yourself in the end.

Finally, women love to do things together, so possibly starting a self defense class or taking a class at a local recreation center could be great. It gives women a chance to bond, and to also learn self defense mechanisms to keep them safe which is a plus.

All in all, the greatest gift that God gave us as women is intuition. As a women you can feel when something is right and it's wrong. So use your gut feeling to determine if you are about to step into a potentially harmful situation, because it just might be what saves you from being the next 2 minute statistic.

Media and Body Image

Every time you turn on the TV, open a magazine, or go to the mall we are bombarded with media's perception of beauty. The constant reminder to be thinner, loose 30lbs, start this diet today and jump on a new one next week. This constant ever changing cycle can really put a strain on the way young women view their bodies and overall appearance. In a sense it is very sad.

As a health educator it is our job to teach girls from a young age that they are beautiful no matter what society says. We can also start teaching at an early age healthy eating habits. Even going as far as having work shops that come in and teach children how to cook health meals that don't involve a stove or oven that way they can make it themselves and not have to rely on their parents, due to the fact that parents aren't always the best example.

As far as the media goes I think it will be a long time before we see a significant change how they portray women and beauty. As apposed to ten years a go I do think we see more minorities in TV shows and commercials, but I also think that they do not depict the overall image of certain races. Hopefully in the next twenty years more campaigns on magazines will say" Love The Body You're In" instead of "Drop Ten in Five Days."

"The Talk"

Where: Living Room on the couch.
When:Saturday afternoon.
How: In a straight foward and open conversation.

It was a Saturday afternoon and Ashley was so excited to attend her first junior high house party, but before she could go her parents wanted to talk to her about "it." Yes "it" the big IT, the sex talk. Ashley knew this day would come, but she hated the fact that it had to be today. Ashley's parents have always been very open with her so she kind of knew what to expect from her parents.
As they all sat on the couch her dad jumped right into with his three main points. 1. No babies. 2. No babies. 3. No babies end of story. Ashley and her mother couldn't help but to laugh at her father's bluntness. On a more serious note Ashley's mother laid everything out on the table for her. She told her about sex and how it isn't just something that you do recreationally. Its something that a man and a woman share when they love each other and that she should wait, but if she couldn't her mother asked that she come to her first. As Ashley took in all the words she spoke Ashley's mother pulled out a bag full of condoms, birth control pamphlets, and several other forms of contraceptive. As they continued their conversation Ashley actually felt at ease. She loved her parents and the relationship they had. Not only did they have love, but they also hsd trust and that's what she cherished most.

Is Inequality Making Us Sick?

I watched the documentary Is Inequality Making Us Sick? Despite the shortness of this film it was very informative. It's really sad to see people, more so women in particular struggle the way this woman did. It's also sad to say that unhealthy food is definitely cheaper than healthier food. In the film she states that she buys more frozenfoods as aposed to fresh foods. She hss to choose brtween buying something that is good for the health of her family, and buying something that can feed and keep her family full for the small amount of money that she has. Life shouldn't be this way. How can we ever become a healthier nation if processed foods are for the poor becauset hey are cheap, but the upper crust of our society are the only ones that can afford to eat right. The figures just don't add up. I also believe that the food industry and health care industry play a major role with one another. If everyone were to eat right certain areas of bealth care would be seriously affected. Due to the simple fact that people continue to eat unhealthy diabetes, obesity, heart disease, and so much more will continue to be on the rise and certain areas of the health industry will never die. It makes you wonder if change will ever come when everyone will be able to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Bio

Hello Everyone!

My name is Shannon Rhodes and I am currently a senior majoring in General Studies with an emphasise in Health Studies and Business. I am very intrested in finding, as well as helping out with HIV/AIDS prevention studies. I also have a passion for finding ways to keep our children healthier, because they are our future. Some of my interest include eating, listening to music, watching TV, reading novels, going to the movies, and talking on the phone.

I don't really have any hobbies, but I absolutely love to spend time with my daughter. She just turned four this past December and she is so much fun. We laugh, we talk, we play, we get our nails done, and so much more. I absolutely love her to pieces even though she can have a bit of a smart mouth sometimes. What I hope to learn most out of this class is how to be a healthier woman. I want to be able to teach my daughter about every aspect of health. Not just the physical side, but also the mental and emotional side of it as well. I look forward to meeting all of you and having a great semester
